The tension dial is the control people reach for first and understand last. Something looks wrong with the stitching, the dial is right there with numbers on it, and turning it feels like doing something. Half the time it makes things worse, because the stitch was telling you about the threading rather than the tension.

Tension is not a setting you memorize. It is something you read off a test scrap, and once you know which side of the fabric to look at, the answer is obvious in about four seconds. What the Tension Actually Does

When both threads pull with roughly equal force, the knot lands in the middle of the fabric layers and the stitch looks the same from both sides. Why the Dial Only Controls Half of It

The dial moves the top tension. The bobbin side has its own tiny spring, and Singer says the bobbin tension is preset at the factory and usually never needs adjusting. The mirror image, with top thread color visible on the bottom, means the top thread is too loose. Brother’s instruction is to turn the dial toward a higher number, to the right. The Rule That Saves the Most Time

Before you touch the dial, rethread. Brother states plainly that if the upper and lower threading are incorrect, the tension cannot be adjusted correctly even by turning the dial, and tells owners to return the dial to 4 first. When the Fabric Changes the Answer

There is no universal correct number. A fine silk and a doubled canvas need different settings with the same machine and the same thread, and the balanced stitch you spent five minutes finding for quilting cotton will be wrong on jersey. That is normal, not a fault.

Thicker fabric generally wants slightly looser top tension, because there is more material for the knot to hide in. Lightweight fabric wants less tension all round, since a tight stitch pulls a fine weave into a ripple.
