A handheld sewing machine that will not sew is almost never broken. The needle goes up and down, the motor whirs, and either nothing happens to the fabric or you get a loose tangle underneath. Both of those symptoms come from the same short list of causes, and the top of that list is the thread path.
Work through the checks below in order. Every one of them is free, none of them needs a tool beyond a pair of scissors, and none of them involves opening the body of the device. Step One: Rethread It Completely

The tension spring is the step people skip, because on most handhelds it is a small metal loop that looks decorative. Thread laid past it instead of through it gives you a machine with no tension at all, which produces loops on the underside or no stitch formation whatever.
Check the Bobbin Too
The small bobbin sits under a cover and has to turn freely and unwind in the direction the diagram shows. A bobbin dropped in backwards will let the device run and produce nothing usable. Wind it evenly if you wound it yourself, since a lumpy bobbin jams in a housing this small.
Step Two: Change the Needle
A new needle is the second free fix and the one people resist because the old one looks fine. Needles bend slightly without showing it, especially after a run at thick fabric, and a deflected needle misses the loop it is supposed to catch, which is what a skipped stitch actually is.
Fit it the way the manual shows, with the flat side or the long groove in the direction the diagram indicates, and push it fully home before tightening. A needle sitting a fraction low changes the timing of the loop pickup, and the device stops forming stitches entirely.
Step Three: Fix the Power
Handhelds run on four AA cells, and the motor loses torque long before the batteries are flat. That shows up as a needle that pushes halfway into fabric and stops, or a stitch that forms in the air and fails on cloth. Fresh cells, or better, the wall adapter, removes the variable entirely.
