The machine has been fine all year. Then you put four layers of coat wool, or a folded canvas hem, or a strap anchor under the foot, and it stalls, skips, jams or snaps a needle. The natural conclusion is that the machine is not up to it, and most of the time that conclusion is wrong.
Thick fabric fails in a small number of predictable ways, and each one has a cheap answer. Work through them in order and you will know, by the end of the list, whether you have a setup problem or a machine that genuinely cannot do the job.

Start With the Needle
A needle that has already sewn twenty hours has a rounded tip, and a rounded tip pushes fabric down instead of piercing it. On thick material that becomes a skipped stitch, a snapped needle or a hole punched in the cloth. Fit a new needle before you change anything else.
Size up as well as changing it. Needle makers point to 100/16 for heavyweight fabric and 110/18 for extra heavy or multiple layer seams, and match the point shape to the material: a jeans needle for dense wovens, a leather needle for hide, a microtex for coated synthetics.
Match the Needle to the Thread Too
If you have moved to a heavier thread for strength or top stitching, the needle eye has to carry it. Thread that shreds or frays on the way through is telling you the eye is too small, not that the thread is bad. Our needle guide sets out the sizes.
Lengthen the Stitch
Set the stitch length to around 3 to 3.5 mm. Short stitches on thick fabric crowd into the same small area of weave, which makes the seam stiff and perforates a line the fabric can tear along. A longer stitch also gives the feed dogs a bigger bite of material on each cycle, so the layers move more reliably.
The exception is stretch material, where a longer straight stitch can pop. There you want a stretch stitch or a narrow zigzag rather than a longer straight stitch.
Back Off the Presser Foot Pressure
If your machine has a pressure dial or a screw on top of the presser bar, this is the control most people never touch. Too much pressure squeezes thick layers so hard that they cannot slide into position, and the top layer stalls while the bottom one moves.
Reduce the pressure a little at a time and sew a test seam after each change. Too little and the fabric skates instead of feeding, so there is a middle setting, and it differs for every fabric stack. Machines without a dial usually have a fixed pressure that is fine for medium fabric and slightly too firm for thick.
Level the Foot Before It Climbs
The single most common thick fabric failure is the foot tipping as it climbs onto a hem or a crossed seam. Once the foot is at an angle the feed dogs lose contact, the needle deflects, and you get a skipped stitch or a break at exactly the wrong spot.
A height compensation tool, often sold as a hump jumper or leveling plate, slots under the back of the foot to keep it flat. A folded scrap of the same fabric does the same job for nothing, if you remember to put it there before you reach the bump.
Use the Handwheel, Not the Pedal
At the thickest point, take your foot off the pedal and turn the handwheel by hand for four or five stitches. You will feel resistance before anything breaks, which gives you the chance to stop, reposition and try again. This one habit saves more needles than any purchase.
Fix the Feed if the Layers Still Shift
If the seam is coming out but the top layer finishes short, the problem is feed rather than power. Feed dogs only move the bottom layer, so on thick or slippery stacks the top one lags behind and the corner ends up out of square.
