You will find confident numbers all over the internet, usually attached to a machine the writer has never put a stack under, and they contradict each other because the question as asked does not have one answer.
Denim runs from light shirting weight to stiff raw denim, and a layer of one is nothing like a layer of the other. What follows is the honest version: why the number moves, what really sets the limit, and how to find your own machine’s ceiling in ten minutes with a scrap.

Four things decide where your machine stops, and only one of them is the machine itself. Understanding which one you are hitting tells you whether the fix costs a few dollars or a few hundred.
Presser Foot Lift
The stack has to fit under the foot before anything else can happen. Most machines have a second, higher lift position on the lever that people never use. Heavy duty lines advertise an extra high lift, and it is the specification that matters most for this question.
Needle Size and Sharpness

The Seam Crossing Is the Real Test
Almost nobody fails on a flat stack. They fail where the flat felled side seam crosses the hem, because at that single point the thickness doubles and the foot has to climb onto it. The machine was managing fine a centimeter earlier.
When the foot tips upward, the feed dogs lose contact and the needle enters at an angle. That produces a skipped stitch, a deflected needle or a snap, and none of it is about power. Levelling the foot with a height compensation tool or a folded scrap behind it removes the problem entirely.
The Handwheel Habit
At the crossing, take your foot off the pedal and turn the handwheel by hand. You will feel resistance building before anything breaks, which gives you the chance to stop and reposition. Find Your Own Machine’s Ceiling
Ten minutes with a scrap tells you more than any article can. Take an offcut of the denim you actually sew, fit a fresh jeans needle, set the stitch length to around 3 mm and work up in steps.
Fold the scrap to two thicknesses and sew a short line at slow speed. Fold again to four, then six, then eight, sewing a line each time and turning the handwheel by hand at the start. Note where the foot stops sitting flat, where the stitch starts to skip, and where the machine will not move the stack at all. That is your ceiling, in the denim you own, on the machine you own.
Then Change One Thing
Repeat the worst step with a 110/18 needle, or with the foot pressure backed off, or with a leveling plate behind the foot. Usually one of those three moves the ceiling up by a fold or two, and now you know which one your machine responds to.
